In the shallow waters off the coasts of Egypt, the French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio discovered and excavated parts of three ancient cities: Alexandria, Herakleion, Egypt's ancient gateway to the Mediterranean, and the old port of Canopus. Modern technology has made it possible to recover relics, including statuary, jewellery, pediments, stone tablets and fragments of buildings, all lost for nearly two thousand years. Like a giant puzzle, the individual pieces have been fitted together and breathed new life into Egyptian history. In photographs of the excavation process, Egypt's Sunken Treasures enables the reader to follow the fate of three ancient cities in the Nile Delta and to look at the valuable clues as to how their citizens lived and worshipped.
