Probably Paul Newman's poorest role and among his earliest. Every member of this cast overacted badly, though most became decent actors later. But it has the distinction of Paul Newman in another outlaw role.

This is the first movie directed by Arthur Penn.
He did not find out that he would not be editing it until after it was finished!

Its interesting to speculate how the film might have turned out differently, if Penn HAD edited it himself ?!?

From then on Arthur Penn always insisted on a 'Final Cut' (ie.Directer's control) clause being included in all of his film-making contracts.

Released in 1958 - This rugged, often overlooked Western starred the youthful, ever-charismatic Paul Newman, as William Bonney (aka. Billy the Kid)._____ Filmed in stark b&w - The Left Handed Gun (set in the late 1870s) tells the gritty tale of a young, uneducated drifter from Brooklyn, New York, who ends up down in New Mexico only to find himself a fabled desperado on the lam after gunning down the sheriff of Lincoln in revenge for the murder of his boss, cattleman, Mr. Tunstall._____ Though a bit overlong, and somewhat flawed and uneven at times, The Left Handed Gun (which is far from being a story based on fact) is still an entertaining and interesting Western, all the same.
