This hypnotic tone poem confirms Sissako's talent for capturing the essence of a place through evocative imagery, Tatiesque comedy, and close observation of everyday life. Abdallah returns to his homeland, a seaside town of Nouadhibou in Mauritania, for an indeterminate amount of time. Now a stranger to his own community and language, the young man tries to absorb as much local color (literally and figuratively) before embarking for Europe.

We are observing a culture that is foreign to us. Most of these people are illiterate and rely on an oral tradition. It seems, in the exchanges with each other, points of views are expressed and sometimes countered; yet the opportunity to learn from each other is valued. Often, there is the feeling that life is spent in a state of suspension. I don't know if this is what was in mind when the title was chosen. There is a feeling that the weight of western influence is burdening most people. The village is a transit point, but some are long settled; some are on a journey and part of happiness is the consolation of moving and searching. Possibly, the test of someone who tells their story, at least in part, is whether the hearer understands. The young boy here adds impact much as Pelle did in 'Pelle the Conqueror'. With the rise of militant Islam, we are beginning to think that parts of the world have an interest in us that we find difficult to ignore; that might encourage us to open to an understanding such as can be derived from this.
