This was an outstanding read. The author's style is simple, direct, vivid and occasionally very funny - all the more poignant given the devastation he records. I am impressed by his ability to recall names, places and events but even more by his modesty. He admits he was no great hero and often afraid and yet the courage he failed to recognize at the time shines through. This is a focused read - he sticks to his years of service as a teenager. Add into this a sweet story of love that grew through the intimacy of letters, and endured because the man came back - and you have a book that's hard to put down.
