Follows the author’s ten-year journey to trace the 13,000-mile overland route--Venice to Beijing--taken by Marco Polo in the thirteenth century. Rutstein became the first person known to have authenticated and retraced Polo’s entire journey. This book recounts the experience. His experiences are accompanied by excerpts from Polo’s own book, Description of the World. Interwoven historical commentaries, geographical and cultural descriptions show how little has changed in seven hundred years in many parts of Asia.

Rutstein sells hi-tech stuff in Seattle, but in his spare time, he studies the 13th-century Italian merchant, and in 1985 followed his track across Europe and Asia to China. This journal of the expedition is accompanied by his 1981 documentary film On the Roof of the World with Marco Polo, about his earlier travels. There is no index. The book and movie are produced in conjunction with the Marco Polo Foundation, also based in Seattle. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The Marco Polo Odyssey follows the fantastic, ten-year journey undertaken by Harry Rutstein to trace the 13,000-mile overland route--Venice to Beijing--taken by Marco Polo in the 13th century. Using every means of travel available, from tractors to camels to goatskin rafts, Rutstein became the only person known to have authenticated and retraced Marco Polo’s entire journey. In this book he recounts the experience, as a history wrapped in adventure.Marco Polo’s travels and subsequent bestselling book sparked the expansion of the mercantile empires of medieval Europe and gave birth to the modern age of globalization.Using excerpts from Polo’s own book, Description of the World, Rutstein weaves together a compelling narrative of the many colorful and humorous adventures he experienced along his journey on the now abandoned Silk Road. The interwoven historical commentaries, geographical and cultural descriptions confirm just how little has changed in 700 years in many parts of Asia.
