Joseph Needham (1900-95) distilled years of study into the history of Chinese science and technology into the Science and Civilization in China, publication of which began in 1954. It was a little much for general readers, so three decades later Temple (history and philosophy of science, Tsinghua U., Bejing) distilled the distillation into this single volume of short essays and full-page, full-color illustrations and without footnotes. Great book with an interesting presentation on the mathematical and physical sciences! I highly recommend the book to history buffs and people who like to know about the origin of our science.

Interesting overall, though tedious in places. Apparently Western culture owes more than we ever knew to ancient China!
