This portable 5x8" collection of classic Irish travel writing gives the reader a deeper appreciation of the work of John Millington Synge, one of Ireland's great playwrights. Synge's visit to the Aran Islands was the direct inspiration for at least two of his plays. The Connemara Writings consist of a series of articles commissioned by the Manchester Guardian, in which Synge, along with traveling companion Jack B. Yeats, was asked to evaluate the social conditions of the area at the turn of the 20th century. Synge celebrates the simplicity, humanity, and culture he found among fishermen, mountain men, and peasants, while at the same time deploring the social deprivations the Irish suffered. The book is distributed in the US by Dufour Editions. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
