Guaranteed to spark discussion and debate--this is a tale of two young boys experiencing the Holocaust from different perspectives and getting caught up in terrible events entirely beyond their control. When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance. But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different from his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating.

I never found it boring. I had actually seen the movie first and of course, preferred the book. I found it to be very accessible and well written. It was quick to get through and didn't feel cumbersome. It is super sad. Like, one of the saddest books ever. I'm glad that I'd seen the movie and was prepared for the book.

Amazingly well done. A must read for fourth grade and older. Bruno's naïveté is a tad bit hard to swallow considering he knew to lie to the officer in the kitchen. A truly unique view of one of the most tragic times in history.

This is a stunning book. I find the perspective that Boyne chose is fascinating and fresh, and the contrast between the main character and his Jewish playmate makes the book even more memorable. Altogether, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and an intriguing Holocaust novel.
