I wonder if this is the same Japanese novel I've read in 1965(?). Well, I'll find out.

This is a 587-minute Japanese epic film trilogy made between 1959 and 1961, based on the six-volume novel published from 1956 to 1958 by Junpei Gomikawa (五味川純平).
It was directed by Masaki Kobayashi (小林正樹) and stars Tatsuya Nakadai (仲代達矢) and Michiyo Aratama (新珠三千代).
The trilogy follows the life of Kaji, a Japanese pacifist and socialist, as he tries to survive in the totalitarian and oppressive world of World War II-era Japan.
It is a heart-wrenching and profoundly thought-provoking documentary-style drama you'd like to view twice---if not thrice.

This multi-disc, black and white film by famed director Masaki Kobayashi runs for over 9 hours. So you need the time budget to view the entire 3-part series. The story is about a humanist/pacifist, Kaji, and how he struggled to behave according to his principle despite the very harsh and unyielding surroundings during WWII. I have a feeling this film is probably not promoted in Japan these days, for its anti-war theme and exposure of war atrocity committed by the occupying forces of Japan in China. This film set is an impressive production from Japan in its the post-war era.

As much as I love Harakiri, I have to say that this is Kobayashi's masterpiece. Maybe the best anti-war film ever made; at least amongst the ones i've seen.

Even divided in parts, the movie is very long. However, there are many lessons to be learned. The price one pays for being conscientious and honorable in a time of war is haunting and tragic.

3 years of filming and 574 minutes in the final product took dedication, and it paid off in spades. An absolutely wonderful project, highly recommended.

You can find patriotism, faithfulness, the madness of war mongers, humanism, atrocity, etc in this eight-hour movie. This is the best war movie that I've ever seen. I admire the play writer looks deep into the human's soul. Thanks to the library service that I can enjoy such a great movie!
