I'm glad I read it. I found the ending satisfactory, and I was interested in finding out what had become of these young people after 40 years, in a way the higher classes had less freedom than the middle classes even in the swinging 60's and '70s. But so much of this novel I found boring, it was too long in my opinion. Still, I will try his most recent novel set in the 19th century.

If you have enjoyed "Downton Abbey," and "Gosford Park" by Julian Fellowes, I think you will enjoy this book. He knows the English class system and the subtle ways in which it still exists..... The characters are very well drawn, well rounded. The premise is quite unique, which I appreciated. His sentences are long and sometimes a little serpentine — one has to hunt back through to find the verb on occasion — but once you get into his style and rhythm, it is a delightful read. I hope he writes many more comedies of manners about our dear friends over the pond.

This book takes awhile. After a bit, you come to hate some of the characters. But the end redeems itself. It's also very interesting in portrayal of British society during the 60's. At times, Fellowes's near rants about modern society get a bit old, but I still enjoyed it.
