Abandoned houses in decay automatically provoke a nostalgic response, particularly when they're set in a lonely landscape. Published in an oversized format (12.25x12.25"), this collection of excellent photos by the architectural photographer Vanden Brink certainly convey a feeling of loneliness, whether it's deserted homes or similarly abandoned grain elevators, storefronts, and even the Air Force plutonium storage vaults in Limestone, Maine. Many of the houses, like Vanden Brink, are in Maine. The volume is not indexed. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Brian Vanden Brink is one of America's most sought-after architectural photographers. He is also drawn to the mystery and unexpected beauty found in abandoned architecture. Here Vanden Brink captures and illuminates in stunning black and white images abandoned structures such as mills, bridges, grain elevators, churches, and storefronts-structures that once were important and useful. With text by historic preservation expert Howard Mansfield, this collection of photos grants permanence to places that may soon vanish forever.

Book had missing pages due to someone ripping them out. Total of 16 pages missing. Notified library about damaged book.

Primarily photos of houses, primarily exteriors only, primarily in Maine and the eastern seaboard. While I love decaying houses as much as the next guy, I want to see the interiors as well. Clearly, Vanden Brink is a talented photographer, and he does capture photos of former military installations, mills, bridges, grain elevators, churches, and storefronts - but overwhelmingly, domicile exteriors are what are featured here.
