holy HECK i loved this book. she is such an imaginative and playful writer. so many highly amusing turns of phrase, not to mention the fantastic world she built and the subtle nuances she explored about faith, humanity, relationships, religion, corruption, etc etc etc. can't say enough good things. i'm going to read everything else she ever wrote now.

The engine of this book was slow to start, but once it did the story and world-building were compelling, the relationships dynamic, and while perhaps overly philosophical at times, was a fascinating discussion of questions around humanity's future. Plus, long-dead alien races and evil four-legged fiends!

Often I find Tepper's work to be didactic, but "Grass" was a compelling read that I return to again and again.

I like how the book explores human assumptions about aliens, and how different creatures can relate to each other.
