Baker & Taylor
A former police investigator tries to solve the murder of his employee, Rosa Novak, following clues through war-torn Europe in 1944, and discovers a connection between the victim, a murdered Parisian furrier, a member of the Resistance, and stolen diamonds.

Blackwell North Amer
On a freezing London night in 1944, Rosa Novak is brutally murdered during a blackout. The police suspect she was the victim of a random act of violence and might have dropped the case if former police investigator John Madden hadn't been the victim's employer.
Madden's old colleagues at Scotland Yard are working on it, but their scant clues lead them to Europe, where the ravages of the war halt their inquiries, Madden feels he owes it to Rosa to find her killer and pushes the investigation until he stumbles upon the dead girl's connection to a murdered Parisian furrier, a member of the Resistance, and a stolen cache of diamonds.
With rich psychological insights and vivid historical details, this riveting novel in the Madden series is a masterpiece of crime fiction.

Story maintains suspense throughout and shows how the police move carefully and methodically to find a psychopathic killer. The story succeeds (to me) in convincingly depicting wartime London with a minimum of detail. John Madden does not figure so prominently in this story but his work does the major unraveling of the mystery... great story.

Once again John Madden is involved in a murder case although he has been retired and living in the country for 20 years. This time the victim was someone who was living under his roof and he feels personally responsible in solving the case. While seeking the truth in wartime London, he finds the usual red herrings and people from his past that will eventually crack this case. Rennie Airth has created an intriguing story that brings back old characters and lets the reader catch up on the Madden family as well. Well worth reading!
