Very odd novel. This was the third time I read it, as I read along whilst listening. It really helped in the comprehension. Nevertheless, apart from parts of chapter 2 and all of chapter 4, it is definitely not a pleasure to read. Most of one's effort is spent just trying to figure what the plot is.
For first time readers, you are warned: I recommend you read ch.2 , then 3, then 1, then 4, and then you'll have to reread the thing over again as Faulkner presented it.
Once one gets the plot sorted out, comes the more delightful aspect, which is reflecting upon the meaning of the work.
The narrator is absolutely great.
I used the Norton Critical Edition to read along with it, and the critical material in it was most helpful. (for first time readers I would recommend reading Vickery's essay first.)

If you are a reader/audio listener that can just go with the flow, this will work for you. The beginning is really rough, so if you haven't any background on the story, I highly recommend you invest in the time to get some. Knowing the style of writing, knowing the background and the reasons for the way he wrote this story, will make all the difference in the world - especially the first narrator of the story.

…it was like trying to read the board of a completed Scrabble game…

This book, as confusing as it is, does not improve in the audio format. I can't imagine anyone who has not read the book or at least a synopsis of the same having any understanding of what is occurring. Unless you have previously read and enjoyed the story, pass on this as an audio book.
