So far I'm floored by the excellent quality of this book. Maass visits locales far from the beaten track to provide first-hand impressions of the communities and figures associated with various oil producing regimes. He manages to be both professional and magnetic in his ruminations on the world oil business. You will be left with an expanded appreciation if you happen to be an end-consumer of gasoline or other oil products.

Maass is a good journalist and that is both a blessing and a curse to this book: It's full of vivid, personal, and engaging stories about the people involved in and surrounded by oil, but it neither draws these stories together nor does it point the way ahead. The subtitle of "The violent twilight of Oil" is somewhat misleading.
