Just as the British are about to return Hong Kong to Chinese rule, Joe Lennox, a young operative for SIS, loses both his girlfriend and his first high-profile asset--a prominent defector who disappears from a safe house.

McMillan Palgrave
Charles Cumming, lauded internationally as the successor to John le Carré, returns with his biggest, most ambitious thriller to date. Beginning in 1997, just as the British are about to re - turn Hong Kong to Chinese rule, Joe Lennox, a young opera tive for SIS (MI6), loses both his girlfriend and his first high profile asset—a prominent defector who disappears from a safe house. The girlfriend he lost to Miles Coolidge, a hard-bitten CIA agent; the asset to collusion between his bosses and the CIA. Over ten years later, during the run-up to the Beijing Olympics, Lennox is back in China, facing his old nemeses. With the CIA plotting to use an Islamic group to destabilize China, the SIS seeking to thwart them and his old asset the key to all of this, Joe Lennox, Miles Coolidge, and the girlfriend they shared are all hopelessly intertwined in a plot where trust is impossible and truth is unknowable.

In 1997, a few months before the British government is scheduled to return Hong Kong to Chinese rule, Joe Lennox, a brilliant young Secret Service agent for MI6, suffers a major reversal. A high-profile asset - an elderly academic claiming to know a sinister secret about the Chinese government - disappears from a safe house in the middle of the night, the result of collusion between Lennox's bosses in MI6 and Miles Coolidge, a maverick CIA officer. At the same time, Joe's relationship with his girlfriend, the ravishing Isabella Aubert, begins to unravel.
More than ten years later, as the country is gearing up for the Beijing Olympics, Joe Lennox finds himself back in China, facing his old nemeses. The CIA has set in motion a plot to use an Islamist group to destabilize China. MI6 is opposed to the plan and will stop at nothing to derail it. At the center of the conspiracy are two men: the asset whom Lennox lost control of more than a decade earlier, and Miles Coolidge, who is now working under deep cover in Shanghai. Caught in the middle is Isabella, the woman Joe has never stopped loving. Their lives once again intertwined, they are caught up in a plot where trust is impossible, the truth is unknowable - and failure is unthinkable.

I totally disagree with Zipread too. It's a great story. Lots of historical information that we in the West have the distance to ignore. A great love story. Fun read. Will take a day.

Totally disagree with 'Zipread', Cumming is now the master of the modern spy thriller. One can read how the present world of espionage really is, and be absorbed by the complex mix of actual facts mixed with his fiction.
Cumming shows a remarkable understanding of historical situations, and their impact on present day world events.

Typhoon by Charles Cumming This is one of those books that one might struggle to read. You know the kind: the one with exciting bits wedged in among stuff that is boring at best. What kind of fool reads 150 pages of a book before chucking it? Reading a book is sort of a contract between a reader who promises to read faithfully and with understanding even if all of the book isn’t electrifyingly engaging. The author, on the other hand, promises to write a book that will engage the reader’s interest and engagement. I held up my en d of the bargain but I’m not sure this book holds up the author’s end of the deal. Time to move on.
