Louis L'amour was known for Westerns. This is not a western. It is a shocking and yet noble look at surviving in the wilderness (not just any wilderness, siberia of soviet era russia). Not the best L'amour novel (I reserve that for any number of his Sackett series novels), but very solid and very clean. What my wife and I like about L'amour is his ability to describe surroundings and characters and tell a story. Joe Mack is a hero for today (2012). Back when this book was written (mid 1980s), a Native American hero was not that common. Maybe that is why Louis L'amour still sells books 20 years after his death.
