First of all, there are remarkable similarities between this and the original 'The Beguiled' featuring Clint Eastwood. So much so that I suspect the latter's source material was a re-write of the source for this. If nothing else, that might indicate the power of this somewhat wistful tale. It is set in a Polish manor house post WWi, where maidens languishing in high style react to the visit from one who set hearts aflutter fifteen years earlier. For everything, turn turn, there is a season. Feels like an honest tribute to, these, woman. For today's women, or some, perhaps they'd rather equality.
