This volume is intended to serve as a handbook for entry into Eritrean studies. It covers geographic, historical, economic, political, social, and cultural issues associated with the Northeast African country. The historical chapter begins with prehistory, but focuses on the 20th century, while the government and politics chapter only addresses the political structures and issues of Eritrea following independence from Ethiopia in 1991. The chapter on the economy describes the major sectors of the Eritrean economy as well as labor issues. Eritrean society is discussed in terms of religion and thought, social classes and ethnicity, women and marriage, and education. Cultural topics are languages, etiquette, literature, art and aesthetics, music, food, leisure and sports, and traditional medicine. A concluding chapter reviews major challenges facing Eritrea today. The volume also includes a glossary, facts and figures, information on holidays, a list of organizations with contact information, an annotated bibliography, and thematic and cumulative indexes.
