The thirteen poems in this collection encourage young readers to snuggle up with a story and stretch their imaginations, to splash in a sea of tales by day and swashbuckle through chapters late at night. Playful illustrations by Yayo compliment thought-provoking poems by Jane Yolen, Rebecca Kai Dotlich, Naomi Shihab Nye, and others.

This lovely collection of poems focuses on books and the reading experience. Playful and accessible, these pages were a reminder of the simple joys of poetry. A favourite poem is the collection's namesake: Tom Robert Shields' "I Am the Book." It warmly reminded me of the joys and power of reading. The illustrations are bright and playful. I can see myself pulling out this book in the future when I'm in need of a quick poem.
