I got bored with Ha Jin's short stories in a modern setting, but I usually like historical novels.
Like most tales of misery this gets repetative, but still was a good read.

I did not enjoy this book as much as previous Ha Jin novels. Perhaps Ha Jin was too emotionally involved with the topic for his usual style to come out. I found his usual rich and poetic prose to be mostly lacking from this latest book. I enjoy his writing very much, but did not find this his best novel from an artistic point of view. But from a historical view, it was extremely well written and the plot kept you throughly engrossed in spite of the horrific events being related.
