This is a sweet story about how the man in the moon came to be, along with all the other childhood guardians. The illustrations are wonderful. William Joyce is a fantastic storyteller.

My four-year-old does enjoy this story, but I'm pretty sure she's missing out on some of the elements the author has included. It would likely be better for an older audience. The details in the pictures are spectacular and the way Mr. Joyce immerses the reader in the world of the Man in the Moon is masterful. I thoroughly enjoy the book each time I read it. Spoiler alert: there is a decently scary portion of the book where main characters die/are eliminated from the plot line. So do read first and consider how little kids will handle that. It's not gruesome, just something that might tap into kids' intrinsic fears.

The Man in the Moon is like those myths which explain why things are the way they are. In this case it is about how the moon we know came to be. Very imaginative and uses a well-known formula; there is a hero who experiences a loss, grows up, and goes on to perform a noble deed. Beautiful illustrations only make this even better.
