Whew! What a life and what a read. My life experience doesn't include knowing someone well who is suffering from addiction to drugs. So reading this book was overwhelming. The main character becomes addicted at a young age. it appears that that chemical flood changed his ability to reason, act, empathize. The author's early life was horrific, but he deadened what resources he might have had to deal with it. He passes it on to his married life and to his children. It's moving, exasperating and sad.
