No matter how fine Fenby grinds the grist, he always comes back to his theme: the personality, behavior and character of « mon Général ». I read this to give context to French war literature, and came away seeing how frail are alliances and how palpable ghosts in today’s French civilization. The later history by the author is more exciting, but a lot of stories of the territories and unsolved mysteries of crime and history are here in the biography.
