This first in a trilogy of DI Wilkins mysteries is so complex that the list of Dramatis Personae and the map of bedrooms came in very handy. Very few of the Earl of Burford's guests are who they are introduced as, and DI Wilkins keeps saying he's "not sanguine" about his ability to solve the mysteries. In an effort to get to the murders, it takes the last third of the book to weed out the people who are wandering about in the night committing lesser crimes. I can hardly wait to find out what the gentry get up to in the next in the series.
