An excellent book written by the son of a Navy Corpsman who never spoke of the horrors he witnessed during that awful battle. Did the previous reader even read this book and the flag raising he describes isn't even close to the truth. The 5th Marines took Mount Surabachi and was sent on a patrol to the top and was given the unit's flag to raise on the top if they made it that far. The whole island and the naval armanda erupted in cheers with most vessels blowing their sirens when the first flag went up. A high ranking officer came ashore right after this incident and brought a larger flag and wanted the original flag as a souvenier. There was a second flag raising and photographer Joe Rosenthal was lucky to notice this event and snap the famous picture that is now a precious symbol of the Marines and the historic battles and sacrifices they've made throughout their incredible history. Highly recommended!!
