I really wanted to like this book as I'm very interested in Vikings. I first found the sequel "The Sea Queen" so logically decided to read "The Half-drowned King" first as it's the first in a trilogy. This book started off great --- I was hooked by the first chapter --- one of the best first chapters I have ever read. I immediately liked the main characters Svanhild and her warrior brother Ragnvald and was very interested in how things would turn out for them. By the time I was half way thru the book, however, I began to lose interest. The story slowed and then completely flatlined. I no longer cared about the main characters and what fate awaited them. In fact, I was angry at Swinvald for her choice of husbands. This book became tedious to read. I hung in as long as I could but gave up with only 60 pages left to read. A huge disappointment. I need to like and care about the characters I'm reading about. The book needs more Viking oomph. I do commend the author for doing a good job in portraying Viking life. The map provided in the book, however, was not adequate enough as it did not include many of the places mentioned in the story. Whoever approved that map made a huge mistake. Vikings sailed the seas from place to place. It is mandatory that a book about Vikings have a sufficient map for the reader to follow their exciting voyages.
