The fifth and final volume in Patricia Highsmith's Riley series (the "Ripliad") and the penultimate book before her death in 1995. In Ripley, Highsmith created what has become an archetype: the sophisticated (he likes art, good food, and classical music) and blandly charming sociopath. Highsmith lived in Europe much of her life and I don't think it's a coincidence that Riley is an American who primarily interacts (and sometimes kills) Europeans. I'll leave the psychologists to figure it out. Some films based on her books to check out: "Strangers on a Train," "Purple Noon," "The American Friend," The Talented Mr. Ripley."
