This book is aimed at elementary school aged children, but it's the best I've found for explaining the digestive system to my 3 year old. The story follows the progression of a burger as it is chewed, swallowed, dissolved in the stomach, etc. All the body parts are color coded. The esophagus is blue, the stomach yellow, the small intestine orange, the large intestine pink. Some of the pages zoom in and focus on just one body part in the digestive process, while others zoom out to show the entire digestive system from beginning to end. The color-coded consistency helps make it clear what body part you are being shown whether its by itself or part of the larger system. They even color-coded the little bits of food being digested so my preschooler and I could identify the green lettuce, red tomato, yellow cheese, etc from the hamburger. At the end of the book, after the food travels all the way through the man, he's shown running to the bathroom - a scene any potty-training toddler can relate to. I'm going to buy this book to add to our home collection because it will grow with my child. Since it's aimed at older kids, it has analogies that will make sense to my daughter when she's older as well as photos of actual body parts (like the epiglottis) that mean nothing to her now but will make sense in a few years. It will be a good book to revisit as my daughter grows to refresh and build-on her understanding of her digestive process.
