Cary Grant and Mryna Loy star as Mr. and Mrs. Blandings, shortly after Loy completed her fifth film in the Thin Man series. Perhaps Hollywood was experimenting with a new partnership after the highly successful William Powell/Myrna Loy pairing as Nick and Nora Charles. This film is a fine comedy of Mr. Blandings experiencing the complications of getting his dream home built. Lex Barker played a construction supervisor and soon after would become the Tarzan follow-up to Johnny Weissmuller, the most famous of all Tarzans. This was a Hollywood 1948 film, so the only significant role for an African-American was as a domestic servant for the wealthy Blandings, helping to imbed in the minds of white Americans that African-Americans were only good for serving white people. I did note though that one day at quitting time one of many carpenters, etc. in a 20 second or so group shot was an African-American. Maybe short enough so that Southern states wouldn’t object to seeing a skilled African-American integrated with whites.
