A Rose by Any Name

[the Little-known Lore and Deep-rooted History of Rose Names]

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. A light but thoroughly enjoyable journey through the history behind rose names. Each short chapter is named for a rose, and symbolizes the theme of that chapter - 'Barbra Streisand' for example, is a chapter on roses named for stars of stage and screen. Lots of interesting facts (like the so-called "Yellow Rose of Texas" was a woman, and the rose most people associate with the song was actually bred in New York). World-wide in scope and covering history just about as far back as roses can be traced, this excellent book should have wide appeal. Don't expect hints on growing roses though - they tell you right up front they don't do that. Reviewed from an advance reading copy, received through the Early Reviewers program. Illustrations are not the final colour versions, so although there are lots of them it is difficult to evaluate the quality
