Mazzucchelli adopts a cartoony style (reminiscent of CITY OF GLASS) for a mature subject: a novel about the destruction of a marriage and a man's midlife redemption. His mastery of the medium gives the best scenes an emotional tug. Avid fiction readers unfamiliar with graphic novels might find this a painless introduction.
