Dewey

the Small-town Library Cat Who Touched the World

This book is a great snapshot of small town America. As others have noted, it's much more about Spencer, Iowa, and the author, Vicki Myron - but as such, it's a great portrait of a cornbelt small town. The best parts, though, are the ones about Dewey. He really does seem to have been an exceptional cat. At one point, other librarians ask Vicki if they should get a library cat too? and she replies, "Only if it's the right cat....He has to be special....Calm, patient, dignified, and above all, outgoing. A library cat has to love people. It also helps if he's gorgeous and comes with an unforgettable story." Certainly all those things were true of Dewey. I laughed and cried on the way through this - enjoyed it a great deal!
