2019 Marks the Centenary of the Bauhaus
Created by GreenwichLibraryArt | 10 items
Today, the term “Bauhaus” has become synonymous with sleek industrial design and international architecture and is even used as shorthand for modernism itself. Originally, however, the Bauhaus, or “building house,” was conceived as a small, experimental art school. Founded in Weimar by architect Walter Gropius, the school soon attracted a distinguished faculty, including Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Lásló-Moholy-Nagy, and Josef and Anni Albers, and innovation, expression, and collaboration were encouraged in both art and life. Though only in existence for 14 years (1919-1933), the Bauhaus profoundly influenced the fields of education, design, and architecture–a global legacy that continues to the present day.
