Lisa Genova creates an entire book's worth of "aha" moments. "Remember" carefully explains the best neuroscientific understanding of our memories - the different kinds of memory (information content, emotional memory, so-called muscle memory, memory of how to do things), and how our brains create memories, reinforce memories, and find memories later in life. The topic also, of course, neatly leads into the aging process and how both normal, light memory loss happens to us all, and how cognitive impairment or situations such as PTSD affect our memories in abnormal ways. This is an owner's manual for our minds, in plain language for us all.Lisa Genova creates an entire book's worth of "aha" moments. Adam Becker shows a knack for making complex issues crystal clear for the reader, and avoids the math (though he can do the math himself). He takes us through ninety years of the history of modern physics, through the tangled web of interpretations of quantum mechanics, and the way that particles can exist in two positions at the same time. Though very physicist agrees that quantum theory works, and can predict phenomena throughout the universe from particle collisions in the Large Hadron Collider, to the life of stars, to the shape of DNA and the way you fry an egg - no complete consensus exists on how to interpret the theory. One dominant position has been essentially to avoid the question, to say that quantum theory works, but only for things too small to be considered part of the real world, but this troubled thinkers from Einstein on. Becker reveals the manifold other ways that people have tried to test - and to understand - what quantum theory means for reality, whether that is a "multiverse" of possible branches in the universe, or String Theory, to Einstein's nonlocal "spooky action at a distance."Adam Becker shows a knack for making complex issues crystal clear for the reader, and avoids the math (though he can do the math himself). The title comes from a phrase that Einstein himself used to describe physical phenomena that seem to break all the rules of the known universe. This is science that reads like Sci-Fi. "Entangled" particles act upon one another regardless of distance, physical matter escapes from a black hole, galaxies exert impossible influences apparently since before the Big Bang... The various manifestations of "nonlocality" in theoretical physics have spawned decades of debate among some of the world's greatest scientific minds, and may lead to the conclusion (a chapter title in Musser's book, in fact) that "Spacetime is doomed." If you enjoy a mind-blowing experience in radical but real science, in which every few pages sends your head spinning at the possibilities, you have found it! (Or maybe it has always been close to you in a parallel universe...)The title comes from a phrase that Einstein himself used to describe physical phenomena that seem to break all the rules of the known universe.
