A two-fer: one Stephen King short story (and that is, of course, a genre in which he excels), and a novella that King himself rates highly.

Just when it seemed Abercrombie had reached the pinnacle of his grisly early modernism, he takes the narrative to another level in high-stakes geo-politics, but also in the eyes of the "little people" who pay the bloody price.

Lewis' classic defense of the Christian worldview ages fairly well, and there always seems to be some new wisdom. - "Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance." (p. 132)
- "I remember Christian teachers telling me long ago that I must hate a bad man's actions, but not hate the bad man: or, as they would say, hate the sin but not the sinner. For a long time I used to think this a silly, straw-splitting distinction: how could you hate what a man did and not hate the man? But years later it occurred to me that there was one man to whom I had been doing this all my life - namely myself. However much I might dislike my own cowardice or conceit or greed, I went on loving myself." The insightful and highly readable author of How the Irish Saved Civilization takes on the "high" middle ages of Europe, the "renaissance" of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. He admits the need to weave a tapestry rather than a singular narrative, with panels richly delving into the lives and contexts of luminaries from Hildegard of Bingen to Peter Abelard, from Bernard of Clairvaux to Eleanor of Aquitaine, from the humanity of Francis of Assisi to the human drama of Giotto and Dante. Throughout, his emphasis is on taking the reader deep into the worldviews and perspectives which together form what we can term the mind of the middle ages.
As a huge bonus, reading this edition of the text replicates some of the experience of an actual medieval manuscript codex: illuminated capitals, marginal annotations (rather than footnotes), colorful borders, and other manuscript details. Ok, who starts a dystopian sci-fi thriller with "My name is Rex. I am a Good Dog." ?? Adrian Tchaikovsky, of course.
And as always, he hits us with a highly thoughtful and fresh concept, while at the same time asking important questions: in this case, how do we define intelligence and personhood beyond a human mind? What engineered forms, artificial forms, distributed forms of intelligence - all of them non-human - count, and what rights do they have? There are strong hints of Vandermeer in the thought process here, but the stories / parables are more direct and less philosophical.Ok, who starts a dystopian sci-fi thriller with "My name is Rex.
